AN HISTORIC FRENCH FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL BY CHASTEAU À PARIS, BEARING THE ARMS OF LOUIS DE BRANCAS, MARQUIS DE CÉRESTE, AMBASSADOR TO THE ROYAL COURT IN MADRID, LATER MARSHAL OF FRANCE
circa 1727-30
With Spanish barrel formed in fout stages, finely engraved with bands of leaves and sprays of flowers over its rear half, involving trophies-of-arms and a coronet and vacant roundel arranged in panels surmounting three gold-filled stamps on the breech, a heart pierced by crossed arrows left and right of the maker's stamp of Bernardo Trigo, gold-lined vent, silver fore-sight, engraved barrel tang, signed bevelled lock finely engraved with further trophies-of-arms, carved moulded walnut full stock decorated with leafy tendrils in low relief about the barrel tang and ramrod-pipe, engraved iron mounts chiselled in low relief, including spurred pommel with chiselled demon mask cap and solid side-plate engraved with Ordnance subjects, iron-capped ramrod, and iron escutcheon incorporating a French Ducal coronet and engraved with the owner's quartered arms encircled by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, together with that of the Order du Saint-Esprit (light pitting throughout).
