A rare French gilt and silvered brass automaton novelty clock
Circa 1870
The automaton domed top rotating to present the cannon with a 360° arc of fire, above a silvered parapet, the tapering cylindrical fort with flaming cannon on chained brackets to the sides and on a square base cast with lion masks and with shell casings to each angle, the feet formed as silvered cannon-balls, the dial flanked by brass flaming torches with mercurial thermometers, clock dial with Roman chapters and blued steel hands, the movement with twin spring barrels, cylinder escapement and strike on a gong, the backplate with stamp for Japy Freres, aneroid barometer with plaque below engraved FORT de LONGCHAMPS A CUPOLE TOURNANTE
