With Inscription Masamune, Edo-Meiji Period (19th Century)
The blade hirazukuri, mitsumune, the jigane is o-itame of 'mixed metals', hamon indistinct due to condition of blade but apparently o-gunome with muneyaki, funagata tang has two holes and ha-agari kurijiri tip. 29.cm, in its aikuchi koshirae with brown-green chirakashi saya, matching silver fittings carved with waves and with applied gold mon, single gilt habaki, kozuka with 'maru ni sanbiki', 'taki ni niwa suzume' and 'Botan' mon, 19th century,

Lot Essay

Accompanied by a Tokubetsu Kicho Kodogu [Sword Fitting Specially Worthy of Preserving] certificate no. 316, issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated November 21 1964, for the koshirae and a slip of paper with seal and kakihan of Hona'ami Tadaaki (19th generation) states that the blade is a genuine Masamune and from the Daté family. Dated 1872 (three years after Tadaaki's death according to reference books).
