Lot Essay

The Garuda dance shows us Ni Pollok on her knees, dressed in a beautifully printed skirt and with a hibiscus in her hair. She wore the same sarong in the painting sold at a Christie's auction in Hong Kong on May, 29, 2005, lot 20. After World War II Le Mayeur made many of these pastels in which he sometimes used other media as well.

The authenticity of this lot has kindly been confirmed by Drs Cathinka Huizing after first hand examination.
