The present figure is copied after an original of circa 1735. Chantilly produced such figures with variations in the pose, some with nodding heads and seated cross legged (cf. Property from the Estate of a Distinguished New York Collector, Christie's, New York, 21 May 1997, lot 64), some with a vase between their knees (cf. Geneviève Le Duc, Porcelaine tendre de Chantilly au XVIII siècle, Paris, 1996, p. 91 [the pair in the J.Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles]), and others fitted with celestial and terrestial globes as inkstands such as the present example (a pair in the Sir Arthur Gilbert Collection). See Florence Slitine, Samson, génie de l'imitation, Paris, 2002, pp. 121-125 for a discussion of the firm's copies after Chantilly originals.
