signed Sisson London, with four-inch spoked wheel to glazed silvered dial with three hands to three concentric graduated scales for feet, yards and furlong or miles, attached to mahogany stick via brass tube with securing pin, the stick with handle -- 137.2cm. (54in.) high

Lot Essay

Jonathan Sisson succeeded by his son Jeremiah worked in The Sphere, Corner of Beaufort Buildings, Strand, London from 1722 to 1783. It is most likely that Jonathon, the father, was the manufacturer of this instrument as he sold surveying instruments whereas his son concentrated on barometers, micrometers and mural quadrants.
