Lot Essay

This service is one of at least three services made for this family, and this one was probably made for Samuel Vaughan, a merchant and planter in Jamaica, who married Sarah Hallowell of Boston Massachusetts. After several years residing in England, the couple settled in North America, and played a prominent part in the life of the new United States. See D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 576.
