A FINE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL BY JEAN JACOB BEHR, MAASTRICHT OR LIÈGE

With brass barrels swamped at the muzzle and formed with a full-length rib with silver sight and inlaid with an engraved silver panel towards the breech, finely engraved with designs of scrolling foliage over both the rear and the muzzle, variously involving animals, monsters and trophies, and struck with a series of five silver-lined maker's stamps (Neue Støckel 41 three times, 42 and another, a bear or dog), brass barrel tang decorated with a pelican in low relief, iron lock with strongly bevelled edges, engraved en suite with the barrel and inscribed 'Viet à Paris', moulded rootwood full stock carved with scrolls and foliage in low relief about both the barrel tang and ramrod-pipe, the latter design involving a pendant demon mask (the butt with small repairs and chipped at the underside joint with the pommel), full gilt-brass mounts cast in low relief, decorated with acanthus patterns throughout, including spurred pommel formed with four raised lobes, those at the sides filled with, respectively, a scene from the chase and a hunting trophy and fitted with raised cap inset with a silver classical head medallion, side-plate pierced with a symmetrical design of scrollwork and monster's heads, faceted ramrod-pipes, escutcheon engraved with the owner's monogram VA, gilt-brass trigger-plate engraved on a punched ground en suite with the mounts, and wooden ramrod with moulded brass tip.
