Lot Essay

A closely comparable model gun and limber stamped 'FD 1835' were sold in these rooms 3 July 1991, lot 146, the gun carriage notably also stamped 'Carriage L.F. Col. Cullen's Pattern Before 1840.'

A model E.I.C 12-pounder and limber stamped 'WC 1825' were also sold in these rooms 16 December 1999, lot 182. A further 6-pounder stamped 'WC 1826' (limber '1829') was sold at Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 24 July 2002, lot 222.

The 'WC' stamps almost certainly refer to Lt. Col. W. Cullen (sic), Superintendent of the Gun Manufactory, South India.
