A NORTH ITALIAN CUIR-BOUILLI POWDER-FLASK
Second half of the 16th Century
With triangular body of plano-convex section, the back and the base each cut with simple fan-like patterns of fluting, the front decorated with the figure of Hannibal crossing the Alps on an armoured elephant, in relief on a contrasting stippled ground, and enclosed by border patterns of dentil mouldings and scrolling foliage also in relief, bound by fluted gilt-iron bands at the base and sides, with parcel-gilt iron top fitted with two-stage nozzle with cut-off moving on an internal spring, belt hook, and wire eyes for suspension (one missing, the belt hook probably associated).
