A DECORATED TURKISH KILIJ
Late 18th Century
With earlier curved blade of characteristic form, the outer-face with gold koftgari Turkish inscriptions in along the chiselled back-edge, and the forte decorated with gold koftgari panels of scrollwork involving brief inscriptions on both sides, gilt-copper hilt applied with filigree scrolls and raised settings in a complex pattern of turquoise and coral, in its gilt-copper scabbard, the inner-face decorated with repoussé interlaced foliage and enclosing a roundel containing an undeciphered inscription dated 1209 AH (1794/5 AD), the outer-face profusely decorated with arrangements of turquoise and coral en suite with the hilt, and two rings for suspension (blade lightly pitted, the koftgari rubbed, pieces of inlay missing, the scabbard with slight shrinkage).
