AN EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN POTTERY AMPHORA
CIRCA 4TH-2ND CENTURY B.C.
With twin vertical handles, cylindrical neck and collared rim, the body tapering towards long knob, on metal stand; and another similar, the body tapering to small foot, 1st Century B.C./A.D., on ornate wrought-iron stand, both with thick marine encrustation
27 in. (68.5 cm.) and 31 in. (79 cm.) high respectively (2)
Provenance
Item one: formerly in an English private collection, acquired before 1980.
Item two: formerly in the collection of a Scottish cleric who had the amphora mounted, 1890. An early 19th Century ink inscribed sheet of paper accompanies the amphora.
