This painting is almost identical to one in the Read Albums in the Pierpoint Morgan Library, New York (Barbara Schmitz, Islamic and Indian Manuscripts and Paintings in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, 1997, fig.179). That painting is attributed by Schmitz to Habib Allah. The present version is likely to be a slightly later copy of that, a copying that was a frequent feature of Safavid painting. In her discussion of the paintings of the Read Albums Schmitz shows a very similar instance of a painting in the album by Muhammad Mu'min dating from around 1600 that was copied about thirty years later in a painting now in the Pozzi Collection by Muhammad Yusuf al-Husaini (figs.177 and 178). Another miniature attributable to Habib-Allah, of a very similar subject to the present example, also from the Read Albums, was sold in these Rooms, 1 May 2001, lot 95. For a discussion of the works of Habib-Allah please see Marie L. Schwietochowski, "Habib Allah", in Robert Hillenbrand (ed.), Persian Painting from the Mongols to the Qajars, London, 2000, pp.283-299).
