Lot Essay
This cane-seated 'Grecian' dressing-stool derives from Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl, 12, fig. 3. It corresponds to a pattern later featured in the Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (no. 3568, dated 1827), though the design was one they had been manufacturing since at least 1812 (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, p. 22).
A closely related stool was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 21 September 1995, lot 150 (£5,980).
