These large vases are decorated either with phoenix, either with dragons.
A similar cloisonné vase, slightly larger, with the same phoenix decoration is in the National Palace Museum, Taipei and illustrated in Enamel Ware in the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties, National Palace Museum, Taipei 1999, pl. 64.
Another vase decorated with dragons from the Fonthill House, Tisbury, Wiltshire, was sold in our London Rooms, 18 October 1971, lot 116, probably from the Summer Palace.
The Fonthill Heirlooms Collection was formed by Alfred Morrison during the 19th century. It included a large quantity of works of art purchased from Lord Loch of Drylaw brought back to Britain after the sacking of the Yuanmingyuan in 1860.
The same lot was offered again in our Hong Kong Rooms, 27 April 1997, lot 22.
