This elegant and finely-carved fauteuil, stamped by Jacob, is a superb example of the outstanding craftsmanship of this menuisier.
The foliate-clasped scroll terminals and fluted cylindrical bases of the arm-supports are both characteristic for his oeuvre and can be found on various chairs stamped by him. This includes a fauteuil supplied by marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre for the Prince Regent's salon de compagnie at Carlton House (Jacques and Henriette Schumann, Christie's, Paris, 30 September 2003, lot 469 (EUR690,250)). A set of five related fauteuils by Jacob was sold, Christie's, New York, 22-23 October 2003, lot 520. Further closely related fauteuils by him are in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (B.G.B. Pallot, Furniture Collections in the Louvre, vol. II, Dijon, 1993, pp. 166-168), and in the Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris (N. Gasc & G. Mabille, The Nissim de Camondo Museum, 1991, pp.16-17, and pp.22-23)
