A Black Lacquer War Hat (Jingasa)
Edo Period (19th century)
Designed in black lacquer with a high central crest and with a sharply pointed peak at the front and back, the front visor slightly extended from the helmet, the lower edge decorated with scrolling vines and geometric bands, the visor with stylized dragons and the sides of the helmet decorated with a character (possibly ya [arrow]), all in gold hiramaki-e, cord ring and tassel applied to rear of helmet
