1757, BLUE INTERLACED LS ENCLOSING DATE LETTER E ABOVE PAINTER'S MARK OE FOR FOURE, INCISED K
With scroll and shell-moulded handles enriched in gilding, the upper part with a green ribbon with gilt undulating line and dots angularly looped and centering sprigs of flowers and issuing trailing flowers, the lower part with a similar narrower ribbon issuing larger sprays of garden flowers including tulip, peony and pink roses, the underside with an elaborate green and gilt ribbon tied into a rosette disguising a firing crack (chip to one handle, two minute chips to upper rim, some wear to rim and handles, flake to gilt line at foot)

Lot Essay

Mathieu Fouré was a painter of flowers from 1754 to 1762. Although it is not confirmed that oe was his mark, he is the most likely author of the mark, see David Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th century (Little Berkhamsted, 2005), Vol. I, p. 42.

For a seau à verre échancré in the Victoria and Albert Museum (C427-1921) with similar decoration, see David Peters ibid. (2005), Vol. II, p. 301.

The form of the present jardinière is very similar to a seau à bouteille, but with straight sides and with no footrim. It appears that no other table-service ware (apart from the seau à verre in the Victoria and Albert Museum) has this type of decoration, indicating that this piece was most probably used for flowers. Lazare Duvaux's accounts note fifteen vases 'pour les plantes de fleurs rapportées de Crécy' were purchased by Madame de Pompadour in 1757, see Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain (London, 1988), Vol. I, p. 25.
