Lot Essay

George, 5th Earl Marischal, was a key figure in negotiating the marriage of King James VI of Scotland to Anne of Denmark. He founded Marischal College in Aberdeen in 1593 and was appointed Royal Commissioner to the Parliament of Scotland in 1609.
The present portrait has traditionally been mis-identified as Sir John Stewart, 1st Earl of Traquair (c.1599-1659).
