FLORENCE 1628 -- SALVADORI, Andrea (1591-1635). Florence: Pietro Cecconcelli, 1628.
4o (231 x 163 mm). Collation: A-L4 M6, 5 folding etched plates by ALFONSO PARIGI the younger (1606-56). Etched frontispiece, woodcut initials and vignettes (slight strengthening in areas of the plates, affecting engraved surface in the corner of one plate, light waterstain at the beginning). Contemporary limp vellum (front endpapers later). Provenance: Filomena Marsili Petrucci (contemporary ownership entry, perhaps a member of the Venetian family of music publishers); Armenio Petrucci (two entries); Arthur Rau (sold to Gourary 1954).
After much intrigue and long negotiations the ducal houses of Farnese and Medici were finally united through the marriage of ODOARDO FARNESE (1612-46) and MARGHERITA DE' MEDICI (1612-79), both 16 years old. The nuptials were celebrated in Florence and Parma with balls, operas, tourneys and banquets. La Flora, a new opera by ANDREA SALVADORI (libretto) and MARCO DA GAGLIANO (1582-1643, composer), was performed on 14 October 1628, three days after the wedding, in the Uffizi Theater. The sets were designed by the younger Parigi, who himself etched the plates reproducing them in this book. They show forest, river and architectural settings, peopled with a large number of Greek mythological figures. The complicated plot tells a story of love and jealousy, set in motion by Jupiter's wish to endow the earth with flowers to balance heaven's stars. Berlin 4114; Nagler, Theatre Festivals p. 139-42; Watanabe 1277.
