A VERY LARGE AND UNUSUAL DARK GREEN JADE BRONZE-FORM VASE, HU
18TH CENTURY
Well carved with thick walls, the shape based on Western Zhou dynasty bronze prototypes, with elongated pear-shaped body and a pair of tubular lug handles positioned above corresponding holes just above the spreading foot, the unusual stone of olive-toned moss-green color and semi-translucent near the rim

Lot Essay

The shape is based on early bronze prototypes, such as the middle Western Zhou dynasty hu illustrated by J. Rawson, Western Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, The Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, 1990, p. 75, fig. 95, which is not as elongated as the present jade example, and which also has a cover.
