Rectangular, traditionally painted with the Mother of God with a child, the pierced oklad applied with two paste stones, the mantel of the Virgin engraved with floral pattern, chased and embossed with stylized foliate borders and with engraved Russian inscriptions in four corners, wooden back with Russian inscription, marked on lower rim

The Russian inscription on the back (which is translated into French on the attached paper label) reads:
'This icon was used by a father to bless his sons in 1849 before he left for war - the Hungarian revolt against Austria - which Tsar Nicholas helped supress. The icon was used for a second time in 1878 to once again bless his sons when he left for the Russo-Turkish War during the reign of Alexander II'.
