The Russian inscription on the back (which is translated into French on the attached paper label) reads:
'This icon was used by a father to bless his sons in 1849 before he left for war - the Hungarian revolt against Austria - which Tsar Nicholas helped supress. The icon was used for a second time in 1878 to once again bless his sons when he left for the Russo-Turkish War during the reign of Alexander II'.
