Webster/Exchange Alley/LONDON', painted inset rocking Chronos automaton to arch MOVEMENT: five pillars, anchor escapement, rack strike on bell; pendulum, two brass weights

Lot Essay

William Webster was apprenticed in 1727, becoming a Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1734. His father, also William, was apprenticed and became journeyman to the eminent clockmaker Thomas Tompion. He founded the family business in Exchange Alley, London which his son continued until 1776.
