A gilt bronze figure of Buddha
Nepal, Dated 825 (1704 C.E.)
Seated in dhyanasana on a high double-lotus base with an inscription running around the lower rim, the right hand in bhumisparshamudra and the left in dhyanamudra cradling a kapala, clad in a pleated sanghati with incised floral motifs, a sash tied around his waist and a torque necklace inlaid with a hardstone adorning his chest, the face with a meditative expression with heavy-lidded eyes beneath sloping brows, straight nose, and pursed lips, the hair in small knots surmounted by a five-part tiara with a hardstone at center

Lot Essay

The translation of the inscription around the base means, The year 824 (1704) was the year of death. On the 9th of the bright half of Margasila, (Nepal) samvat 825 (Nov/Dec 1704) this statue of Sri 3 Aksobhya Tathagata was consecrated in the name of the deceased father Sri Cukuni Vajracarya by the sons Padmasinga and Padmaraja. May it be auspicious."
