Deeply carved on the concave side with a multi-levelled landscape inhabited by sages and boys engaged in various activities, all amidst pine trees and bamboo groves, the top left corner with a long poetic inscription, the reverse left plain

Lot Essay

The long inscription appears to have been added much later, according to the last four characters, which read Wu Nanyu ke and may be translated as 'carved by Wu Nanyu'.
Wu Nanyu (1894-1941) was a famous calligrapher and carver of his time and worked primarily with ivory, bamboo and other organic material.
