Lot Essay

The inscription is an extract from Meihua jiushou, 'Nine Poems on Prunus' by the early Ming scholar Gao Qi (1336-1373).

It may be translated as:

The scholar reclines in the mountain capped with snow;
The lady comes from the forest bathed in the moonlight.
