The openwork top formed by latticework repeated on the upper portion of the frame above plain stretchers, the soft mat seat set within the thick, rectangular frame and enclosed by further latticework beneath conjoined cash-form roundels, all above a narrow waist and beaded aprons, the whole supported on slightly inward-curved, beaded legs terminating in thick, hoof feet

Lot Essay

Several canopy beds of related form with various lattice-work designs framed by the rails are published by Wang Shixiang in Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, vol. II, Hong Kong, 1990, pp. 134-5, nos. C15-17. A four-poster canopy bed in tiger maple, dated to the 18th century, from the collection of Gangolf Geis, was sold in these rooms, 18 September 2003, lot 28.
