A GREEN JADE ARCHAISTIC FACETED VASE AND COVER
18TH/19TH CENTURY
Each side carved in low relief with a taotie mask formed by pairs of confronted birds with large eyes carved in high relief, below further taotie masks on the sloping shoulder and neck, which is flanked by a pair of monster-mask handles, with notched flanges dividing each side and at the corners, the cover carved en suite below the rounded rectangular finial, the semi-translucent stone of mottled rich green color

Lot Essay

A smaller (24.7 cm.) white jade hu-form vase and cover carved in very similar fashion is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Yang Boda in Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, Hong Kong, 1997, pp. 36-7, no. 18.
