Count Pavel Aleksandrovich Stroganov was a member of one of the richest families in Russia, highly educated and well travelled; after military training he commanded an infantry division during the Napoleonic wars, and sat on the privy council of the empire. Stroganov's interesting life as courtier, soldier and diplomat was recorded by Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich in Le Comte Paul Stroganoff published in Paris in 1905, which included correspondence with the emperor and others, but does not appear to include these letters.
