KÖHLER, Heinrich Karl Ernst von (1765-1838). Description d'un camée du cabinet des pierres gravées de sa Majesté Impériale L'Empereur de toutes les Russies. St. Petersburg: Senate Press, 1810.
8° (235 x 145mm). 3 engraved plates by Klauber after Vogel. (Margins lightly browned.) Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, spine gilt in compartments, sides with gilt foliate border, gilt edges, Greek key inner dentelles, pale-blue endpapers (rebacked preserving much of the original spine, endpapers darkened). Provenance: Tsarskoe Selo (library stamp) -- Plaza Book Auction, New York (sold, 21-24 November 1933, lot 438; description tipped to rear pastedown) -- Calvin Bullock (bookplate) -- William Doyle Galleries, New York (sold, 07 May 1997, lot 130).
FIRST EDITION. THE TSARSKOE SELO COPY, IN RED MOROCCO. This fine Classical cameo, a rare representation of The Three Graces, was acquired by Catherine II with the St-Morys collection. Catherine's enduring passion for cameos resulted in one of the world's great collections, now in the Hermitage.
