Contemporary green morocco, sides with an all-over panelled design in gilt and blind, white moiré-style endpapers, gilt edges (endpapers lightly discoloured). Provenance: Maximilian Beauharnais, 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852, bookplate) -- A. Herenroth.

THE LEUCHTENBERG COPY, in a handsome green morocco binding, of the inaugural volumes of this important historical periodical. Maximilian, 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg, married Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, eldest daughter of Tsar Nicholas I, and sister of Tsar Alexander II. The Society was founded in 1846 by Köhne, F. Jyle and J. Reichel, and quickly became influential in stimulating lively historical research in Russia; important work, including that of Zabelin and Rovinskii, was published with the assistance of Society prizes. The first volume includes a description of pre-Romanov coinage in Russia. Each volume bound with the 'Bulletin' of the Society. Ivask, vol. 2, ill. 10. (2)
