The slender vase of baluster form is decorated with a snowy, mountainous, river landscape with a pavilion, rocks and a boat in which a scholar on a donkey, accompanied by his attendant, crosses a bridge. A calligraphic inscription to the reverse reads Taxue Xunmei that may be translated as 'Searching for Plum Blossoms in Snow' and is followed by two iron-red seals of the artist. The base has a four-character iron-red seal mark Xuren Jingzhi within a square. Together with its 1946 original invoice.

Lot Essay

He Xuren (1882-1940) is one of the eight ceramic masters of the early 20th century known as "The Eight Friends of Zhushan". He is celebrated for his snow landscapes.
Christie's Hong Kong sold a pair of vases by He Xuren with similar subject matter in The Yiqingge Collection of Chinese Ceramics, 29 May 2013, lot 2034.
