The upper surface is smoothly polished with a shaped indentation on one end forming the inkwell, centred with a cylinder carved with a Shou character on top, and framed on three sides with a keyfret border. One vertical side is carved with two characters in running script, Jing shou, 'peaceful longevity', followed by a signature of Shi An; another vertical side is incised with a poetic inscription, signed Da Chongguang, while the third side is carved with a three-character inscription in clerical script, Jingdaiwei, 'golden belt worn by chief councillor', above a signature of Jinsheng followed by a one-character seal, Gao. The gently sloping base is incised with a portrait of a chief councillor.
