A YELLOW AND RUSSET JADE GOOSE

The pebble is finely carved in the round with the head of the goose turned back resting gently on the body, the webbed feet tucked underneath carved in shallow relief. The wing feathers are incised in details. The stone is of a greenish-yellow tone with milky and brown russets and grey inclusions.

Compare to a pale celadon jade goose also modelled with its head similarly turned, dating to the 17th/18th century, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 1 December 2010, lot 2958. The Li Ji, Book of Rites, mentions wild geese returning as guests for the Autumn and geese have long been associated with the wish for longevity.
