This lacquer qalamdan comes from a group that first appeared on the market in 1921. They were sold that year as part of the collection of Sir Walter Beaupré Townley at Sotheby’s on the 30th June. Sir Walter Townley KCMG (1863-1945) was a member of the diplomatic service and during his career held Ambassadorial positions to Romania, the Netherlands and Iran, the latter between 1912 and 1916. These qalamdans were most probably acquired during that post. Three further qalamdans from the same collection are offered in this sale (lots 151-153 and 156) and at Christie's, King Street, 10 April 2014, lots 98-102.
