SIR ROBERT NAUNTON, Fragmenta regalia; or Observations on Queene Elizabeth, her Times and Favourites, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [17th century]
290 x 180mm. 39 leaves. Manuscript copy in a 17th-century hand, extracted from the printed text published in 1653. 17th-century panelled black morocco gilt binding. Provenance: J.B. Yates; A.H. Bright, 1896.
Written in 1634, in the final months of his life, Naunton’s Fragmenta regalia gathered together a series of character sketches and observations on Elizabeth I and her court, which the author intended to present to Charles I as an advice manual for practical governance. After discussing Elizabeth I – ‘she was learned, her sex and the times considered’ – Naunton’s text draws on the lives of courtiers including the Earls of Essex, Leicester and Oxford, Sir Walter Raleigh and Lord Burleigh.
