Small 4° (193 x 134mm). Title within wide woodcut historiated border, initials, with final blank. (Title lightly spotted.) Marbled calf by Bedford, double gilt fillet on sides, gilt edges (rebacked, new endpapers). Provenance: A. Heywood Bright (bookplate).
First published in London by Pynson in 1521, the work marks “a critical moment in the history of the English Reformation” (PMM). Henry VIII dedicated it to Leo X, and as one of the lasting ironies of history earned the title 'Defender of the Faith' as his reward. Adams H-247; cf. PMM 50.
