JUVENAL. - PERSIUS. [Satyrae.] Venice: Aldus & Andreas Torresanus, August 1501 [but circa 1515].

8° (158 x 95mm). Aldus device on title. (Lightly spotted.) 19th-century morocco-backed boards (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: A. Heywood Bright (bookplate).

Second Aldine edition. It is not quite clear why it was decided in the House of Aldus and Andrea, his father-in-law, as the press styled itself at this period, to maintain the date of Aldus's first edition for this reprint. The Aldine Press company had been formed in 1495, with Pierfrancesco Barbarigo, son of the former Doge of Venice, Marco, as the major shareholder; the prosperous printer-publisher-bookseller Andreas Torresanus of Asola (1451-1528), who had been established at Venice since the mid-1470s, took the next largest share, with Aldus himself, who was to marry Torresani's daughter Maria in 1505, probably being only a fairly minor shareholder in his father-in-law's part. Torresani involved himself increasingly in the business of the Aldine Press from about 1508 onwards, taking over the management after Aldus's death in 1515, while publishing under his own name as late as 1527. Adams J-772; Renouard 29:6.
