This table with its shaped top and shell-headed cabriole legs with claw-and-ball feet accords with the known work of Benjamin Crook, cabinet-maker, who worked at the sign of The George & White Lion, St Paul's Churchyard, London, from 1732-1748. A superb table by Crook formerly in the collection of the distinguished furniture collector, Percival D. Griffiths, F.S.A, is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700 - 1840, Leeds 1996, p. 169, fig. 265. It was sold by his Executors, Christie's, London, 10 May 1939, lot 202, and again, anonymously, Christie's, London, 15 April 1999, lot 107 (£56,500 including premium). Another closely related table was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 22 Jan 2009, lot 85 (£17,500 including premium).
