A FINE PAIR OF SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK BELT PISTOLS
BY ADAMS, BIRMINGHAM, CIRCA 1770
With blued swamped two-stage barrels engraved with scrollwork on the octagonal breech sections, engraved grooved tangs, signed engraved flat bevelled locks each with water drains to the priming-pan, figured walnut full stocks, each with a carved shell behind the barrel-tang and inlaid with silver wire scrollwork, shells and flower-heads throughout, silver mounts including trophy of arms side-plates and engraved spurred pommels each with grotesque mask cap, the former each with contemporary iron belt-hook, silver trophy of arms escutcheons each engraved with the crest and motto of the Clan MacNab, original silver-capped horn ramrods, one with worm, and retaining some original blued finish to the barrels, private Birmingham proof marks
12 ¼ in. (31 cm.) overall
Almost certainly by Joseph Adams who is recorded at 74 Lichfield Street between 1767 and 1774.
