Chogyal Pagpa (1235-1280) was one of the founders of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism and the personal spiritual adviser to Kublai Khan (1215-1294), the Yuan dynasty ruler of the Mongol Empire.

A THANGKA DEPICTING A DALAI LAMA INCARNATION
18TH-19TH CENTURY
Chogyal Pagpa is depicted wearing flowing robes, seated in dhyanasana with his hands held in dhyanamudra, looking down at a figure presenting an offering. He is flanked by large floral sprays and a monastery amidst mountains in the distance. The upper register depicts a further lama to the left and Medicine Buddha to the right. There are two wrathful deities to the lower register.
