對於中國傳統繪畫中工筆與寫意技巧之熟稔掌握,同時受保羅•克利與胡安•米羅等歐洲現代藝術代表人物的影響,陳有炳在探索水墨畫的過程中逐漸發展出個人獨 到的藝術語彙,也確立其新加坡第二代海外藝術家中佼佼者的身份。陳有炳於1947 年出生在新加坡,早年曾師事國畫名家范昌幹,他自中國水墨的傳統中奠定藝術根基,並開啟早期創作生涯的知名度。陳有炳藝術表現中一個相當傑出的特點在於,他善於掌握一個視覺焦點作為主幹,再從中向外延展出一不僅細節細膩、且散發活力與生命的完整意象,這與其細膩的技法以及深受冥想與寧靜啟迪的創作哲思息息相關。 《母子》中色彩明亮的斑點,替整體構圖增添些許輕鬆詼諧的調性。畫中一隻小猴子懸吊在陡峭危險的崖面上,身處上方的母猴趕緊將手臂向下伸出。陳有炳精准地結合水墨暈染的技巧與縱橫交織的筆觸,再次闡明其欲傳達的訊息—— 睦融洽、愛以及對偉大母愛之歌頌。
