6 parts, 2° (410 x 325mm). Hand-coloured engraved title, and 36 hand-coloured aquatints on thick paper by Reeve, Fielding and others after Grindlay, Daniell and others, coloured by J. G. Hogarth, part titles in parts II-VI, advertisement leaf in parts II, IV & VI, title-page with blind stamp ‘Smith & Elder, London’ in imprint and lower margin. (Lower outer corner of plate ‘Indra Subra’ in pt. V dust-soiled, occasional light dust-soiling in margins of plates.) Original olive green printed wrappers, title within a wide wood-engraved border (a few minor chips). Provenance: purchased from Robinson, London, 15 February 1943.

A CLEAN, DECKLE EDGED, BRIGHTLY COLOURED COPY IN ORIGINAL PARTS with little of the spotting known to affect this work. 'Next to Daniell, the most attractive colour plate book on India' (Tooley). A self-taught amateur artist, Grindlay went to India in 1803, aged 17. He served with the East India Company's military service from 1804-1820 and during this period made a large number of sketches and drawings recording the life and landscape of India. The subjects include scenes and views of Bombay, Golconda, Ellora and Guzerat. VERY RARE IN THIS STATE. No records of a copy in original parts and retaining the wrappers are listed in on-line ABPC or RBH. Abbey Travel 442; Colas 1333; Tooley 239.
