A LARGE CARVED HUANGHUALI BRUSHPOT
LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
The brushpot is of cylindrical shape carved in relief with magnolia, lingzhi, narcissus, prunus and crabapple growing from rock. The
wood is of a rich caramel and honey tone.

The composition of the relief carving seen on this brushpot, is very similar to a zitan brushpot in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, vol. 44, Hong Kong, 2002, p. 24, no. 23. Compare, also, a very similar large huanghuali brushpot dated to 17th century, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 3 June 2015, lot 2946.

The historical CITES paperwork for this lot is not available and it will not be possible to obtain CITES export permit to ship it to addresses outside Hong Kong post-sale.
