The first edition, a large paper copy with edges uncut, documenting the Russian Northeast Expedition led by Commodore Joseph Billings. Billings was appointed by Catherine the Great, and Sauer (of whom little is known) became his secretary and historian of the voyage. They visited Kodiak, Montague Island, and Prince Williams Sound, producing detailed charts and marking the close of the Russian surveys on the Eastern coast of Siberia.
