JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET CALLED FRANCISQUE MILLET, SHEPHERDS IN AN IMAGINARY ITALIAN LANDSCAPE, OIL ON CANVAS

The œuvre of Francisque Millet (1642-1679) mirrors his life; born in Antwerp but of French origins, Millet’s work reflects this dual influence, with on one side the Flemish landscape painter Abraham Genoels (1640-1723), who accompanied Millet during a trip to Holland, and on the other the French painter Nicolas Poussin (1641-1665), whose later works came to redefine the importance attributed to the classical landscape.

Théodore’s (1660-?) engravings allow us to get a clear sense of Millet’s oeuvre. Namely, his landscapes utilize a high point of view which creates a plunging view over vast horizons, in a manner that is reminiscent of Poussin’s grandiose and heroic landscapes. In our painting, we can see, far along to the left, a classical town towards which is headed a cowherd and his drove of cows. The same compositional elements can be found in a picture brought to market by Christie’s on the 7th of July 1995, lot 74, titled A classical Landscape with Roman Merchants on a Path, a hill town beyond, as well as in another composition depicting the Flight into Egypt, today in a private collection.

L'oeuvre de Francisque Millet (1642-1679) est à l'image du peintre : né à Anvers mais d'origine française, Millet est influencé par ces deux grands centres de production artistique, avec d'un côté les compositions du peintre paysagiste anversois Abraham Genoels (1640-1723), qui l'aurait accompagné lors d'un voyages aux Pays-Bas, et de l'autre celles du peintre français Nicolas Poussin (1641-1665), dont la maturité correspond à l'importance accordée au paysage classique.

Grâce aux gravures de Théodore (1660-?), nous pouvons nous faire une idée précise de l'oeuvre de Millet. Celle-ci adopte généralement une composition en vue plongeante sur de vastes horizons, rappelant les paysages grandisoses et héroïques de Poussin. Dans notre tableau, nous apercevons, au loin sur la gauche, une ville antique vers laquelle semblent se diriger, au deuxième plan, un vacher et son troupeau. Ces mêmes éléments sont retrouvés dans une composition passée en vente chez Christie's à Londres le 7 juillet 1995, lot 74, Paysage classique avec des marchands romains sur un chemin, ainsi que dans un tableau représentant la Fuite en Égypte aujourd'hui conservé dans une collection particulière.
