FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, HEAD OF A WOMAN, HALF-LENGTH, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK, STUMPING, ON BROWN PAPER

This sheet is a study for the Allegory of Painting, a painting produced by Boucher as a pendant to the Allegory of Music in the National Gallery of Art in Washington (inv. 1946.71; see A. Ananoff, François Boucher, Lausanne, II, Paris, 1976, nos. 580-581). The painting was executed towards the end of the artist’s life, in 1765, when he was appointed Premier peintre du Roi and elected director of the Académie (Philip Conisbee, French Paintings of the Fifteenth through the Eighteenth Century, Washington, 2009, pp. 25-32).
We would like to thank Alastair Laing and François Joulie for confirming the attribution to Boucher on the basis of a photograph of the work.

Cette feuille est une étude pour le tableau Allégorie de la Peinture que Boucher réalise en paire avec l’Allégorie de la Musique conservé à la National Gallery of Art à Washington (inv. 1946.71 ; voir A. Ananoff, François Boucher, Lausanne, Paris, 1976, II, pp. 232-233, nos 580-581). Le tableau est exécuté en 1765 vers la fin de sa vie, l’année où il est nommé premier peintre du roi et élu directeur de l’Académie (Philip Conisbee (éd.), French Paintings of the Fifteenth through the Eighteenth Century, Washington, 2009, pp. 25-32).
Nous remercions Alastair Laing et François Joulie d’avoir confirmé l’attribution après examen photographique de l’œuvre.
