Calamity Jane a été prépublié dans Spirou (du n°1437 du 28 octobre 1965 au n°1458 du 24 mars 1966). Parution en album (n°30) en 1967.

Pour la première fois dans la série, c’est un personnage féminin qui tient la vedette. Et quel personnage ! Il s'agit de Martha Jane Cannary, mieux connue sous le surnom de « Calamity Jane ». En couverture du journal Spirou, Lucky Luke n’hésite pas à présenter son portrait, une photo d’époque restée célèbre, en disant : « Voici la fameuse Calamity Jane, photographiée quand elle était encore jeune et jolie. »
Comment s’emparer d’une légende de l’Ouest dans une bande dessinée humoristique, sans trahir la vérité historique ? Les auteurs ont trouvé la solution ; au début de l’épisode, Calamity s’exclame : « Je vais te raconter l’histoire de ma vie, Lucky Luke, c’est un passe-temps que j’affectionne. » Il est tout à fait exact qu’en 1896, elle a dicté ses mémoires pour préparer une tournée de spectacles, comme il est avéré qu’elle a enjolivé de nombreux souvenirs : « Faut te dire que je suis assez menteuse » confie-t-elle à Lucky Luke. Après ce préambule, Goscinny et Morris sont libres de laisser vagabonder leur imagination, pour un album particulièrement savoureux.
La planche 6 décrit l’arrivée remarquée de Calamity dans le village d’El Plomo. Sous le crayon inventif de Morris, toute une galerie de nouveaux personnages va rencontrer Calamity Jane. Parmi eux, Robert Gainsborough, professeur de maintien et de bonnes manières, venu de Houston, qui prend les traits de l’acteur britannique David Niven.

How do you capture a Western legend in a comic book without misrepresenting the historical truth? The authors found the solution; at the beginning of the episode, Calamity exclaims: "Let me tell you the story of my life, Lucky Luke. It's a favourite pastime of mine." It's true that in 1896 she dictated her memoirs in preparation for a tour of shows - and it's also true that she embellished many of her memories: "I'm a pretty good liar," she tells Lucky Luke. After this preamble, Goscinny and Morris were free to let their imaginations roam, and the result is a particularly entertaining album.
Page 6 portrays Calamity's grand arrival in the town of El Plomo. Morris's inventive pencilling introduces Calamity Jane to a whole host of new characters. Among them is Robert Gainsborough, a teacher of deportment and good manners from Houston, to whom he gives the features of British actor David Niven.
