ARNOLD BÖCKLIN, STUDY OF A RECLINING DRYAD, GRAPHITE
Arnold Böcklin was the leading representative of the Symbolist movement in Switzerland and Germany. He drew his inspiration from ancient mythology, translating its eerie strangeness. Appreciated during his lifetime, his work remained particularly influential in artistic circles at the turn of the century. His famous Island of the Dead, 1880 (Kunstmuseum Basel, inv. 1055; first version) inspired Sergei Rachmaninov's symphonic poem of the same name (Opus 29) in 1909. The present drawing is a preparatory sketch for the painting Pan and the Dryads, now in the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, and shows a lying dryad listening to the god's flute.

Arnold Böcklin est le représentant majeur du courant symboliste en Suisse et en Allemagne. Il puise son inspiration dans la mythologie antique, dont il traduit l’inquiétante étrangeté. Appréciée de son vivant, son œuvre restera particulièrement influente dans les cercles artistiques du tournant du siècle. Ainsi sa célèbre Île des morts de 1880 (Kunstmuseum Basel, inv. 1055 ; pour la première version) inspirera le poème symphonique homonyme (opus 29) de Sergeï Rachmaninov en 1909. Le présent dessin constitue une esquisse préparatoire au tableau Pan et les Dryades aujourd’hui conservé au Von der Heydt Museum de Wuppertal et présente une dryade allongée absorbée par l’écoute de la flûte du dieu.
