Launched in 2005, reference 5250 in white gold marked the debut of Patek Philippe’s Advanced Research series, representing a significant milestone in both design and technology. As the first limited edition within this innovative programme, it introduced a groundbreaking silicon-based escape wheel for a Swiss lever escapement, incorporated within an annual calendar movement, the calibre 315 S IRM QA LU SI. Building on the success of this pioneering model, Patek Philippe subsequently expanded the series with references 5350, 5450, 5550, the Aquanaut reference 5650, and most recently the minute repeater reference 5750 'Fortissimo'.
The Advanced Research department at Patek Philippe is dedicated to advancing horological performance through technical innovation. Among its most significant achievements is the development of silicium components, produced using the highly sophisticated DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching) process.
Traditionally, hairsprings were made from carbon steel, a material susceptible to magnetism, oxidation, and temperature variations. By contrast, silicium offers numerous advantages: it is non-magnetic, resistant to corrosion, unaffected by temperature changes, and significantly lighter than conventional materials. These properties contribute to improved precision, stability, and long-term reliability, reflecting Patek Philippe’s ongoing pursuit of technical excellence.
